TUCSON (October 14, 2025 ) The Metropolitan Pima Alliance (MPA) Board of Directors voted to take a position of support for the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA Next). Seeking to renew the existing half-cent sales tax, the RTA Next Plan, approved in September of 2025 by the RTA Board, will go before the voters of Pima County in March of 2026 for approval. In support of the ballot measure and plan, the Board of Directors has released the following statement:
“On behalf of the MPA, we proudly support the advancement and approval of the RTA Next plan. This framework reflects a thoughtful and inclusive approach to regional transportation planning and represents a vital investment in the future of our region.We commend the RTA Board, composed of elected officials from across the region, for their leadership and dedication. Their collaborative efforts, alongside the Technical Management Committee and newly appointed Executive Director Mike Ortega, have resulted in a plan that prioritizes regional connectivity, economic vitality, and long-term infrastructure investment.
We are especially encouraged that the current RTA plan includes realistic and achievable budgets and remains on track to be completed as promised, delivering on commitments made to voters and reinforcing public trust in the process. While unforeseen factors such as the Great Recession and the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to years of sales tax revenue shortfalls, Eller College of Management’s population growth projections also revealed slower-than-anticipated regional expansion, which further strained available resources. This combination of economic disruption and accelerated growth delayed the completion of some projects. Nevertheless, the RTA has remained steadfast in its commitment to transparency and accountability, ensuring that the original plan will be fulfilled and that RTA Next is grounded in fiscal responsibility and community priorities.
